To expound on the correlation between the microorganism communities and the formation of off-odour in Xuanwei ham, the microorganism communities and volatile compounds were investigated in the biceps femoris (BF) and semimembranosus (SM) of Xuanwei ham with different quality grades (normal ham and spoiled ham). The single molecule real-time sequencing showed that differential bacteria and fungi were more varied in normal hams than in spoiled hams. Headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography (HS-SPME-GC-MS) results indicated that aldehydes and alcohols were significantly higher in spoiled hams than those in normal hams (p < 0.05). The off-odour of spoiled hams was dominated by ichthyic, malodourous, sweaty, putrid, sour, and unpleasant odours produced by compounds such as trimethylamine (SM: 13.05 µg/kg), hexanal (BF: 206.46 µg/kg), octanal (BF: 59.52 µg/kg), methanethiol (SM: 12.85 µg/kg), and valeric acid (BF: 15.08 µg/kg), which are positively correlated with Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus licheniformis, Pseudomonas sp., Aspergillus ruber, and Moraxella osloensis. Furthermore, the physicochemical property and quality characteristics results showed that high moisture (BF: 56.32 g/100 g), pH (BF: 6.63), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) (SM: 1.98 MDA/kg), and low NaCl content (SM: 6.31%) were also responsible for the spoilage of hams with off-odour. This study provided a deep insight into the off-odour of Xuanwei ham from the perspective of microorganism communities and a theoretical basis for improving the flavour and overall quality of Xuanwei hams.

In this retrospective study conducted at Sichuan Jinxin Xinan Women and Children's Hospital spanning January 2015 to December 2021, our objective was to investigate the impact of embryo cryopreservation duration on outcomes in frozen embryo transfer. Participants, totaling 47,006 cycles, were classified into 3 groups based on cryopreservation duration: ≤1 year (Group 1), 1 to 6 years (Group 2), and ≥6 years (Group 3). Employing various statistical analyses, including 1-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test, chi-square test, and a generalized estimating equation model, we rigorously adjusted for confounding factors. Primary outcomes encompassed clinical pregnancy rate and Live Birth Rate (LBR), while secondary outcomes included biochemical pregnancy rate, multiple pregnancy rate, ectopic pregnancy rate, early and late miscarriage rates, preterm birth rate, neonatal birth weight, weeks at birth, and newborn sex. Patient distribution across cryopreservation duration groups was as follows: Group 1 (40,461 cycles), Group 2 (6337 cycles), and Group 3 (208 cycles). Postcontrolling for confounding factors, Group 1 exhibited a decreased likelihood of achieving biochemical pregnancy rate, clinical pregnancy rate, and LBR (OR < 1, aOR < 1, P < .05). Furthermore, an elevated incidence of ectopic pregnancy was observed (OR > 1, aOR > 1), notably significant after 6 years of freezing time [aOR = 4.141, 95% confidence intervals (1.013-16.921), P = .05]. Cryopreservation exceeding 1 year was associated with an increased risk of early miscarriage and preterm birth (OR > 1, aOR > 1). No statistically significant differences were observed in birth weight or sex between groups. However, male infant birth rates were consistently higher than those of female infants across all groups. In conclusion, favorable pregnancy outcomes align with embryo cryopreservation durations within 1 year, while freezing for more than 1 year may diminish clinical pregnancy and LBRs, concurrently elevating the risk of ectopic pregnancy and preterm birth.

Chemical analysis of ions and small organic molecules in liquid samples is crucial for applications in chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, and health monitoring. Mainstream electrochemical and chromatographic techniques often suffer from complex and lengthy sample preparation and testing procedures and require either bulky or expensive instrumentation. Here, we combine triboelectrification and charge transfer on the surface of electrical insulators to demonstrate the concept of triboelectric spectroscopy (TES) for chemical analysis. As a drop of the liquid sample slides along an insulating reclined plane, the local triboelectrification of the surface is recorded, and the charge pattern along the sample trajectory is used to build a fingerprinting of the charge transfer spectroscopy. Chemical information extracted from the charge transfer pattern enables a new nondestructive and ultrafast (<1 s) tool for chemical analysis. TES profiles are unique, and through an automated identification, it is possible to match against standard and hence detect over 30 types of common salts, acids, bases and organic molecules. The qualitative and quantitative accuracies of the TES methodology is close to 93%, and the detection limit is as low as ppb levels. Instruments for TES chemical analysis are portable and can be further miniaturized, opening a path to in situ and rapid chemical detection relying on inexpensive, portable low-tech instrumentation.

Purpose: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a frequent cause of infertility in reproductive-age women. Our work aims to evaluate the effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) on gut microbiota, with metabolic parameters including body weight and the hormone profile in PCOS. Patients and Methods: Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)-induced PCOS mice were established and then treated with two GLP-1RAs: liraglutide and novel form semaglutide for four weeks. Changes in body weight and metabolic parameters were measured. Fecal samples were collected and analyzed using metagenomic sequencing. Results: Liraglutide and semaglutide modulated both alpha and beta diversity of the gut microbiota in PCOS. Liraglutide increased the Bacillota-to-Bacteroidota ratio through up-regulating the abundance of butyrate-producing members of Bacillota like Lachnospiraceae. Moreover, liraglutide showed the ability to reverse the altered microbial composition and the disrupted microbiota functions caused by PCOS. Semaglutide increased the abundance of Helicobacter in PCOS mice (p < 0.01) which was the only bacteria found negatively correlated with body weight. Moreover, pathways involving porphyrin and flavonoids were increased after semaglutide intervention. Conclusion: Liraglutide and semaglutide improved reproductive and metabolic disorders by modulating the whole structure of gut microbiota in PCOS. The greater efficacy in weight loss compared with liraglutide observed after semaglutide intervention was positively related with Helicobacter. The study may provide new ideas in the treatment and the underlying mechanisms of GLP-1RAs to improve PCOS.

This study aimed to investigate the synergistic effects of high-intensity ultrasound (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 min) in combination with L-lysine (15 mM) on improving the solubility and flavour adsorption capacity of myofibrillar proteins (MPs) in low-ion-strength media. The results revealed that the ultrasound treatment for 20 min or the addition of L-lysine (15 mM) significantly improved protein solubility (p < 0.05), with L-lysine (15 mM) showing a more pronounced effect (p < 0.05). The combination of ultrasound treatment and L-lysine further increased solubility, and the MPs treated with ultrasound at 20 min exhibited the best dispersion stability in water, which corresponded to the lowest turbidity, highest absolute zeta potential value, and thermal stability (p < 0.05). Based on the reactive and total sulfhydryl contents, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy analysis, the ultrasound treatment combined with L-lysine (15 mM) promoted the unfolding and depolymerization of MPs, resulting in a larger exposure of SH groups on the surface, aromatic amino acids in a polar environment, and a transition of protein conformation from α-helix to ß-turn. Moreover, the combined treatment also increased the hydrophobic bonding sites, hydrogen-bonding sites, and electrostatic effects, thereby enhancing the adsorption capacity of MPs to bind kenone compounds. The findings from this study provide a theoretical basis for the production and flavour improvement of low-salt MP beverages and the utilisation of meat protein.

Non-invasive droplet manipulation with no physical damage to the sample is important for the practical value of manipulation tools in multidisciplinary applications from biochemical analysis and diagnostics to cell engineering. It is a challenge to achieve this for most existing photothermal, electric stimuli, and magnetic field-based technologies. Herein, we present a droplet handling toolbox, the ferrofluid transporter, for non-invasive droplet manipulation in an oil environment. It involves the transport of droplets with high robustness and efficiency owing to low interfacial friction. This capability caters to various scenarios including droplets with varying components and solid cargo. Moreover, we fabricated a droplet array by transporter positioning and achieved droplet gating and sorting for complex manipulation in the droplet array. Benefiting from the ease of scale-up and high biocompatibility, the transporter-based droplet array can serve as a digital microfluidic platform for on-chip droplet-based bioanalysis, cell spheroid culture, and downstream drug screening tests.

MOTIVATION: Binding of peptides to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules plays a crucial role in triggering T cell recognition mechanisms essential for immune response. Accurate prediction of MHC-peptide binding is vital for the development of cancer therapeutic vaccines. While recent deep learning-based methods have achieved significant performance in predicting MHC-peptide binding affinity, most of them separately encode MHC molecules and peptides as inputs, potentially overlooking critical interaction information between the two. RESULTS: In this work, we propose RPEMHC, a new deep learning approach based on residue-residue pair encoding to predict the binding affinity between peptides and MHC, which encode an MHC molecule and a peptide as a residue-residue pair map. We evaluate the performance of RPEMHC on various MHC-II-related datasets for MHC-peptide binding prediction, demonstrating that RPEMHC achieves better or comparable performance against other state-of-the-art baselines. Moreover, we further construct experiments on MHC-I-related datasets, and experimental results demonstrate that our method can work on both two MHC classes. These extensive validations have manifested that RPEMHC is an effective tool for studying MHC-peptide interactions and can potentially facilitate the vaccine development. 4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) is considered a priority organic pollutant with high toxicity. Many authors have been committed to developing efficient, green, and environmentally friendly technological processes to treat wastewater containing 4-NP. Here, we investigated how the addition of Ca2+ affects the catalytic degradation of 4-NP with AgInS2 when exposed to light. We synthesized AgInS2 (AIS) and Ca2+-doped AgInS2 (Ca-AIS) with varying amounts of Ca2+ using a low-temperature liquid phase method. The SEM, XRD, XPS, HRTEM, BET, PL, and UV-Vis DRS characteristics were employed to analyze the structure, morphology, and optical properties of the materials. The effects of different amounts of Ca2+ on the photocatalytic degradation of 4-NP were investigated. Under visible light illumination for a duration of 120 min, a degradation rate of 63.2% for 4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) was achieved. The results showed that doping with an appropriate amount of Ca2+ could improve the visible light catalytic activity of AIS. This work provides an idea for finding suitable cheap alkaline earth metal doping agents to replace precious metals for the improvement of photocatalytic activities.

OBJECTIVE: We aim to molecularly stratify stage IA lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) for precision medicine. METHODS: Twelve multi-institution datasets (837 cases of IA) were used to classify the high- and low-risk types (based on survival status within 5 years), and the biological differences were compared. Then, a gene-based classifying score (IA score) was trained, tested and validated by several machine learning methods. Furthermore, we estimated the significance of the IA score in the prognostic assessment, chemotherapy prediction and risk stratification of stage IA LUAD. We also developed an R package for the clinical application. The SEER database (15708 IA samples) and TCGA Pan-Cancer (1881 stage I samples) database were used to verify clinical significance. RESULTS: Compared with the low-risk group, the high-risk group of stage IA LUAD has obvious enrichment of the malignant pathway and more driver mutations and copy number variations. The effect of the IA score on the classification of high- and low-risk stage IA LUAD was much better than that of classical clinicopathological factors (training set: AUC = 0.9, validation set: AUC = 0.7). The IA score can significantly predict the prognosis of stage IA LUAD and has a prognostic effect for stage I pancancer. The IA score can effectively predict chemotherapy sensitivity and occult metastasis or invasion in stage IA LUAD. The R package IAExpSuv has a good risk probability prediction effect for both groups and single stages of IA LUAD. CONCLUSIONS: The IA score can effectively stratify the risk of stage IA LUAD, offering good assistance in precision medicine.

Octacosamicin A is an antifungal metabolite featuring a linear polyene-polyol chain flanked by N-hydroxyguanidine and glycine moieties. We report here that sub-inhibitory concentrations of streptomycin elicited the production of octacosamicin A in Amycolatopsis azurea DSM 43854T . We identified the biosynthetic gene cluster (oca BGC) that encodes a modular polyketide synthase (PKS) system for assembling the polyene-polyol chain of octacosamicin A. Our analysis suggested that the N-hydroxyguanidine unit originates from a 4-guanidinobutyryl-CoA starter unit, while the PKS incorporates an α-hydroxyketone moiety using a (2R)-hydroxymalonyl-CoA extender unit. The modular PKS system contains a non-canonical terminal module that lacks thioesterase (TE) and acyl carrier protein (ACP) domains, indicating the biosynthesis is likely to employ an unconventional and cryptic off-loading mechanism that attaches glycine to the polyene-polyol chain via an intermolecular amidation reaction.

Objective: To investigate the effect of a nursing health education model based on the Rosenthal effect on the posttraumatic growth of patients with a first accidental fracture. Methods: We recruited 212 patients with a first accidental fracture from February 2021 to February 2022; the patients were divided into a control group (n = 106) and an Rosenthal Group (n = 106). The control group received daily care during hospitalization, and the Rosenthal Group received treatment based on a Rosenthal effect health education model. We compared the 2 groups before and after treatment using the Chinese Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (C-PTGI), the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) to assess pain, the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) to assess quality of life, the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), and the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD). Results: The psychological resilience of both groups of patients improved after treatment, as assessed by C-PTGI and CD-RISC (all P < .05), and the Rosenthal Group improved more than the control group after treatment (all P < .05). The sleep quality and pain scores, as measured by PSQI and VAS, improved for both groups of patients after treatment, and the Rosenthal group improved more than the control group after treatment (all P < .05). The quality of life, as assessed by SF-36, of both groups of patients was similar before treatment (all P > .05) and improved significantly after treatment (all P < .05). The patients' depression and anxiety, as assessed by HAMA and HAMD, improved in both groups after treatment (all P < .05), and the Rosenthal group improved more than the control group after treatment (all P < .05). Conclusion: The Rosenthal effect nursing health education model promotes the posttraumatic psychological growth of patients with a first accidental fracture and enhances their psychological resilience, showing that the Rosenthal effect has important health benefits and can be promoted for clinical application to adjust a patient's psychological state.

The auditory steady-state response (ASSR) is a cortical oscillation induced by trains of 40 Hz acoustic stimuli. While the ASSR has been widely used in clinic measurement, the underlying neural mechanism remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the contribution of different stages of auditory thalamocortical pathway-medial geniculate body (MGB), thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN), and auditory cortex (AC)-to the generation and regulation of 40 Hz ASSR in C57BL/6 mice of both sexes. We found that the neural response synchronizing to 40 Hz sound stimuli was most prominent in the GABAergic neurons in the granular layer of AC and the ventral division of MGB (MGBv), which were regulated by optogenetic manipulation of TRN neurons. Behavioral experiments confirmed that disrupting TRN activity has a detrimental effect on the ability of mice to discriminate 40 Hz sounds. These findings revealed a thalamocortical mechanism helpful to interpret the results of clinical ASSR examinations.Significance Statement Our study contributes to clarifying the thalamocortical mechanisms underlying the generation and regulation of the auditory steady-state response (ASSR), which is commonly used in both clinical and neuroscience research to assess the integrity of auditory function. Combining a series of electrophysiological and optogenetic experiments, we demonstrate that the generation of cortical ASSR is dependent on the lemniscal thalamocortical projections originating from the ventral division of medial geniculate body to the GABAergic interneurons in the granule layer of the auditory cortex. Furthermore, the thalamocortical process for ASSR is strictly regulated by the activity of thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) neurons. Behavioral experiments confirmed that dysfunction of TRN would cause a disruption of mice's behavioral performance in the auditory discrimination task.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the effect of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) trigger alone versus dual trigger comprising GnRHa and low-dose human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) on reproductive outcomes in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who received the freeze-all strategy. METHODS: A total of 615 cycles were included in this retrospective cohort study. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to control potential confounding factors between GnRHa-trigger group (0.2 mg GnRHa) and dual-trigger group (0.2 mg GnRHa plus 1000/2000 IU hCG) in a 1:1 ratio. Multivariate logistic regression was applied to estimate the association between trigger methods and reproductive outcomes. RESULTS: After PSM, patients with dual trigger (n = 176) had more oocytes retrieved, mature oocytes, and 2PN embryos compared to that with GnRHa trigger alone. However, the oocytes maturation rate, normal fertilization rate, and frozen embryos between the two groups were not statistically different. The incidence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) (14.8% vs. 2.8%, P < 0.001) and moderate/severe OHSS (11.4% vs. 1.7%, P < 0.001) were significantly higher in dual-trigger group than in GnRHa-alone group. Logistic regression analysis showed the adjusted odds ratio of dual trigger was 5.971 (95% confidence interval 2.201-16.198, P < 0.001) for OHSS. The pregnancy and single neonatal outcomes were comparable between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: For PCOS women with freeze-all strategy, GnRHa trigger alone decreased the risk of OHSS without damaging oocyte maturation and achieved satisfactory pregnancy outcomes.

Separating water-in-oil emulsions is important in terms of environmental protection and resource recovery. To address the challenges posed by the water-oil interface, superwetting materials have been designed to accomplish separation through filtration and adsorption. Superhydrophobic membranes prevent the permeation of water droplets owing to extreme repellence and their size-sieving abilities. However, their use in remediating water-contaminated oil is limited by high oil viscosities. Meanwhile, in-air superhydrophilic sorbents are rarely employed for the separation of water-in-oil emulsions due to the thermodynamic and kinetic limitations of water adsorption in oil. Herein, the integration of an under-medium superlyophilic membrane with the hierarchical porous structure of wood is presented for filtration-driven selective adsorption of water from surfactant-stabilized (10 g/L) water-in-oil emulsions. Compared to filtration through a natural wood membrane or direct adsorption using an under-oil superhydrophilic wood membrane, the under-medium superlyophilic wood membrane demonstrated high separation efficiencies of > 99.95% even when applied to the regeneration of high-viscosity lubricating (6.3 mPa s) and edible (50.5 mPa s) oils, exhibiting viscosity-dependent fluxes and excellent stability. Moreover, the cost of purifying 200 mL of lubricating oil using the modified wood membrane was much lower than the oil's market price and required a low energy consumption of ca. 1.72 kWh. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: The ever-growing use of petroleum and industrial/domestic oil products has led to excessive (estimated at a million tons per year) output of waste oils. Because direct discharge of waste oils into the environment causes serious pollution problems, separating water-in-oil emulsions is important in terms of environmental protection and resource recovery. Here filtration-driven water adsorption has been demonstrated to be a feasible method for the remediation of water-contaminated waste oils, even those that are highly viscous.

PURPOSE: To explore the effect of green channel for stroke patients on the treatment of severe aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. METHODS: This is a retrospective case-control study. The clinical data of patients with severe aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage admitted to the emergency department of our hospital from January 2015 to June 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients diagnosed with subarachnoid hemorrhage, confirmed intracranial aneurysm by preoperative CT angiography or digital subtraction, graded Hunt-Hess grade III, IV, and V, < 72 h from the onset to the time of consultation received surgical treatment in our hospital were included in this study. Patients with serious underlying diseases, such as heart, liver, kidney diseases, or malignant tumors, traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage, previous history of cerebral hemorrhage, and incomplete data were excluded. The control group included patients with severe aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage admitted from January 2015 to December 2018 before the establishment of the green channel for stroke patients, and the observation group included patients with severe aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage admitted from January 2019 to June 2022 after the establishment of the green channel. The control group received routine treatment in the emergency department; the observation group received improved treatment of green channel for stroke patients. Gender, age, Hunt-Hess grade on admission, modified Rankin scale (mRS) on admission, aneurysm location, aneurysm size and whether accompanied by intracerebral hemorrhage, the time from onset to emergency department, the time from emergency department to vascular diagnostic examination, the time from onset to surgery, the time from emergency department to surgery, the time from hospital admission to surgery, length of hospital stay, complications, treatment effect were analyzed and compared between the 2 groups. SPSS 23.0 software was utilized to conduct comparisons between the 2 groups. The t-test, Chi-square test, or Mann-Whitney U test was chosen based on the data type. Statistical significance was established when p < 0.05. RESULTS: A total of 71 patients were included in this study, of whom 37 were in the control group and 34 were in the observation group. There were no statistical differences in age, gender, Hunt-Hess grade, mRS scores, aneurysm location, aneurysm size, intracerebral hemorrhage, the time from onset to emergency department, length of hospital stay, complications between the observation group and the control group (all p > 0.05). The time (min) from visit to vascular diagnostic test (60.50 vs. 120.00, p = 0.027), the time (min) from onset to surgery (1792.00 vs. 2868.00, p = 0.023), the time (min) from emergency department to surgery (1568.50 vs. 2778.00, p = 0.016), the time (min) from hospital admission to surgery (1188.50 vs. 2708.00, p = 0.043), all of them were shorter in the observation group than those in the control group. The relative values of admission and 7-day postoperative mRS scores and the relative values of admission and discharge mRS scores ≥ 2 were used as the criteria for determining better efficacy, and the treatment effect was better than that in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (admission to 7 days postoperative mRS score ≥ 2, 17 (50.0 %) vs. 8 (21.6 %), p = 0.012; admission to discharge mRS score ≥ 2, 19 (55.9 %) vs. 11 (29.7 %), p = 0.026). CONCLUSION: The green channel for stroke patients with severe aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage can effectively shorten the time from arrival at the emergency department to vascular diagnostic examination and the time from the emergency department to surgery, and achieve a better therapeutic effect, which is worth popularizing and applying.

Phosphorylation, as one of the most important post-translational modifications, plays a key role in various cellular physiological processes and disease occurrences. In recent years, computer technology has been gradually applied to the prediction of protein phosphorylation sites. However, most existing methods rely on simple protein sequence features that provide limited contextual information. To overcome this limitation, we propose DeepMPSF, a phosphorylation site prediction model based on multiple protein sequence features. There are two types of features: sequence semantic features, which comprise protein residue type information and relative position information within protein sequence, and protein background biophysical features, which include global semantic information containing more comprehensive protein background information obtained from pretrained models. To extract these features, DeepMPSF employs two separate subnetworks: the S71SFE module and the BBFE module, which automatically extract high-level semantic features. Our model incorporates a learning strategy for handling imbalanced datasets through ensemble learning during training and prediction. DeepMPSF is trained and evaluated on a well-established dataset of human proteins. Comparing the analysis with other benchmark methods reveals that DeepMPSF outperforms in predicting both S/T residues and Y residues. In particular, DeepMPSF showed excellent generalization performance in cross-species blind test performance, with an average improvement of 5.63%/5.72%, 22.28%/25.94%, 20.11%/17.49%, and 26.40%/28.33% for Mus musculus/Rattus norvegicus test sets in area under curves (AUCs) of ROC curve, AUC of the PR curve, F1-score, and MCC metrics, respectively. Furthermore, it also shows excellent performance in the latest updated case of natural proteins with functional phosphorylation sites. Through an ablation study and visual analysis, we uncover that the design of different feature modules significantly contributes to the accurate classification of DeepMPSF, which provides valuable insights for predicting phosphorylation sites and offers effective support for future downstream research.

The rapid-developing soft robots and wearable devices require flexible conductive materials to maintain electric functions over a large range of deformations. Considerable efforts are made to develop stretchable conductive materials; little attention is paid to the frequent failures of integrated circuits caused by the interface mismatch of soft substrates and rigid silicon-based microelectronics. Here, we present a stretchable solder with good weldability that can strongly bond with electronic components, benefiting from the hierarchical assemblies of liquid metal particles, small-molecule modulators, and non-covalently crosslinked polymer matrix. Our self-solder shows high conductivity (>2×105 S m-1), extreme stretchability (~1000%, and >600% with chip-integrated), and high toughness (~20 MJ m-3). Additionally, the dynamic interactions within our solder's surface and interior enable a range of unique features, including ease of integration, component substitution, and circuit recyclability. With all these features, we demonstrated an application as thermoforming technology for three-dimensional (3D) conformable electronics, showing potential in reducing the complexity of microchip interfacing, as well as scalable fabrication of chip-integrated stretchable circuits and 3D electronics.

Bioinspired artificial skins integrated with reliable human-machine interfaces and stretchable electronic systems have attracted considerable attention. However, the current design faces difficulties in simultaneously achieving satisfactory skin-like mechanical compliance and self-powered multimodal sensing. Here, this work reports a microphase-separated bicontinuous ionogel which possesses skin-like mechanical properties and mimics the multimodal sensing ability of biological skin by ion-driven stimuli-electricity conversion. The ionogel exhibits excellent elasticity and ionic conductivity, high toughness, and ultrastretchability, as well as a Young's modulus similar to that of human skin. Leveraging the ion-polymer interactions enabled selective ion transport, the ionogel can output pulsing or continuous electrical signals in response to diverse stimuli such as strain, touch pressure, and temperature sensitively, demonstrating a unique self-powered multimodal sensing. Furthermore, the ionogel-based I-skin can concurrently sense different stimuli and decouple the variations of the stimuli from the voltage signals with the assistance of a machine-learning model. The ease of fabrication, wide tunability, self-powered multimodal sensing, and the excellent environmental tolerance of the ionogels demonstrate a new strategy in the development of next-generation soft smart mechano-transduction devices.

A series of CaGdAlO4-type layered perovskite phosphors showing deep red luminescence (λem = 711 nm, λex = 338 nm) were synthesized via a solid-state reaction. A comprehensive analysis performed via photoluminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermoluminescence, and fluorescence decay revealed that the deep red luminescence is related to oxygen defects and particularly oxygen interstitials. The defect-related luminescence was effectively regulated through partial substitution of multi-cationic sites (the Ca2+ site with Mg2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+; the Gd3+ site with La3+, Y3+, and Lu3+) and full substitution of Gd3+ with Y3+. Remarkably, a 383.3% stronger luminescence was obtained through partial substitution with Lu3+, and the quantum yield of luminescence reached 28.74%, which is higher than those values of most previously reported self-luminescent systems. A pc-LED device was fabricated using this phosphor, and the device was shown to have potential application in indoor plant cultivation.

Myocardial infarction (MI) results in high mortality. The size of fibrotic scar tissue following MI is an independent predictor of MI outcomes. Thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) is involved in various fibrotic diseases. Its role in post-MI cardiac fibrosis, however, remains poorly understood. In the present study, we investigate the biological role of TXNIP in post-MI cardiac fibrosis and the underlying mechanism using mouse MI models of the wild-type (WT), Txnip-knockout ( Txnip-KO) type and Txnip-knock-in ( Txnip-KI) type. After MI, the animals present with significantly upregulated TXNIP levels, and their fibrotic areas are remarkably expanded with noticeably impaired cardiac function. These changes are further aggravated under Txnip-KI conditions but are ameliorated in Txnip-KO animals. MI also leads to increased protein levels of the fibrosis indices Collagen I, Collagen III, actin alpha 2 (ACTA2), and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF). The Txnip-KI group exhibits the highest levels of these proteins, while the lowest levels are observed in the Txnip-KO mice. Furthermore, Txnip-KI significantly upregulates the levels of transforming growth factor (TGF)B1, p-Smad3, NOD-, LRR- and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3), Cleaved Caspase-1, and interleukin (IL)1B after MI, but these effects are markedly offset by Txnip-KO. In addition, after MI, the Smad7 level significantly decreases, particularly in the Txnip-KI mice. TXNIP may aggravate the progression of post-MI fibrosis and cardiac dysfunction by activating the NLRP3 inflammasome, followed by IL1B generation and then the enhancement of the TGFB1/Smad3 pathway. As such, TXNIP might serve as a novel potential therapeutic target for the treatment of post-MI cardiac fibrosis.
